Boston SOS is an attempt to save Boston from its sometimes too serious self- but there are many other opportunities to save Boston in many different ways. Here is a listing of just some of the ways you can get involved:


Arms Around Arlington- Center for Cancer

Grassroots organization providing cancer support and wellness programs for people with cancer, their loved ones and caregivers as well as health care professionals.

AAC Events

Events department within AIDS Action Committee - fund-raising events, ie: AIDS Walk Boston, Monster Challenge Triathlon, etc.

AIDS Action Committee

Offers HIV-related, health information, volunteer opportunities, and event calendars for the AIDS Action Committee.

American Anti-Slavery Group

Founded in 1994, the American Anti-Slavery Groups advocates for the freedom of all humans currently in bondage.

American Cancer Society (Making Strides Against Breast Cancer)

The American Cancer Society is currently looking for Route Monitors,
for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, on October 14, 2007.
Route Monitors will help coordinate the dynamics and ensure the safety
of expectd 35,000 walkers around the six-mile route.

American Diabetes Association-MA

As an American Diabetes Association volunteer, you can use your
expertise and experience in leadership, business, health care,
marketing, public relations, government relations, fundraising to make
a vital difference.

American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay


Best Buddies Massachusetts

Non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with
intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one
friendships and integrated employment. The Citizens Program
accomplishes this by matching citizens in the community with people
with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships.

Big Sister Association of Greater Boston

"Since 1951, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston has been helping
girls reach their full potential through positive mentoring
relationships with women. Big Sister is the largest mentoring
organization in Greater Boston exclusively serving girls, covering 69
cities, towns and communities."

Boston Living Center

The Boston Living Center provides services and programs for people with
HIV and AIDS. Volunteers needed to help serve meals, answer phones, for
special events, to work with children, etc.

Boston Living Center

Serve Lunch at the Boston Living Center Tuesday through Saturday from
10am to 2:30pm. The Boston Living Center offers meals, education,
social services, and a supportive environment to those infected with
and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Back Bay

Boston Partners in Education

Helping students in the Boston Public Schools gain the academic skills
they need to become successful learners. Volunteer as a tutor, mentor,
speaker, or classroom assistant.

Bread and Jams

"Bread & Jams, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c) 3 charitable
organization which assists people with the transitions in their lives
when they find themselves at risk or homeless. We are a compassionate,
professional, and ethical organization, providing a safe and supportive
environment to the homeless community and others in crisis, by offering
tailored services and tools to encourage a sense of community, self
advocacy, and empowerment with openness and respect."

Brookline Community Center for the Arts

Non-profit organization that serves as a culturally integrated venue
where members of all ages and abilities can participate in world dance
forms, martial arts, fitness, acting, music, and other arts. Numerous
volunteer positions available.

Camp Carole

Camp for children living with cancer, open to children from all over
New England. Make a donation, join our e-mail club, and make a
difference.

Christmas in the City

"CITC is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to supporting and
mentoring Boston's homeless families. Major programs include a holiday
party for 2500+ homeless children and their families, and our
Adopt-A-Family, where a teams of volunteers is assigned to a family as
they leave the shelter to assist them in the transition from
homelessness to independent living."

Citizen Schools

After-school program located in 11 Boston public schools. We rely on
volunteers from the community teaching what they know and love to a
small group of 9-14 year olds. We have lawyers who teach law and cooks
teach cooking. We believe everyone has something that they can teach to
children.

Boston's only free, hot, home-delivered meals program for people ill with AIDS.

Community Technology Center Support Project

Looking for technically skilled and passionate people to help bridge
the digital divide by providing technology support (tutoring,
troubleshooting, etc.) to local community technology centers.

Extra Hands for ALS in Boston

"We need students to volunteer to assist patients with ALS (Lou
Gehrig's Disease) in their homes. We are also looking for mentors to
supervise the relationship between patients and students."

Feed the Hungry

Helping the homeless and sailors along and near the waterfront.

Friends of the Community Paths

Working to connect walking/bike paths into a regional network serving
recreation & commuting by extending the Minuteman Bikeway to the
Charles River in Somerville. Local resident volunteers needed.

Generations Incorporated

Uniting the generations to strengthen individuals and communities.
Programs include reading coaches for grades 2 and 3 and mentors for 4th
and 8th graders.

Greater Boston Food Bank

Easing hunger in the Boston area.

Greenhouse School

Join volunteers at The Greenhouse School, a year-round, extended day
school in Salem serving kids from infancy through grade 8. When the
kids aren't there, we paint, fix, mend, rake, make handmade paper, and
a lot of other activities.

Habitat for Humanity Boston

HFH Boston is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to
building simple low-cost homes by forming working partnerships with
very low-income families in desperate need of decent housing.

Haiti's Children Relief Project, Inc.

An organization collecting clothes, shoes, school supplies, computers and money to assist families with children in Haiti.

Harvard Museum of Natural History

Volunteer gallery guides needed. Help visitors explore and learn about
the 'glass flowers', ancient life, biodiversity, minerals. No
experience required, just enthusiasm. Training provided. One morning or
afternoon/week.

Hospice of Boston and Greater Brockton

"Seeking caring adults to help us care for our terminally ill patients
and their families. Qualities of warmth, compassion, non-judgmental
attitudes and the ability to be a good listener and communicator are
enhanced by each volunteer's style, skills and experiences. Our hospice
volunteers are provided with the necessary training, on-going support,
and education to assist them in providing care and comfort to our
patients."


Hospitality Homes

Hospitality Homes provides no-cost, short-term housing in volunteer
host homes for families of patients traveling to Boston for medical
treatment.


Jimmy Fund

Boston's leading cancer fundraising effort.

Junior League of Boston

"The Junior League of Boston feeds volunteers to approximately twenty
community service projects in Greater Boston, all focusing on the
health and education of women and children. In addition, the Junior
League organizes several major fund-raising campaigns each year to
support its projects."

Leonard Carmichael Society

Tufts University's umbrella student volunteer organization. Organizes
programs addressing issues dealing with hunger and homelessness, youth
mentoring, literacy and education, health, and more.

Maple Farm Sanctuary

Sanctuary for farm animals rescued from abuse and neglect. We need
volunteers to help with cleaning stalls, feeding animals, grooming,
etc."

Massachusetts Service Alliance

Mission: "to generate an ethic of service throughout the Commonwealth
by creating and supporting diverse, high quality service and volunteer
opportunities for all age groups, resulting in stronger communities and
more active citizens."



MetroLacrosse

Coach Boys or Girls Youth Lacrosse in Boston. As a coach you will help
run two practices a week, with games on Saturday mornings.

Museum of Science

With more than 600 interactive exhibits, the Museum of Science strives to
stimulate interest in science and technology and their importance to
individuals and society. Offers a variety of volunteer positions in a dynamic environment.

New England Aquarium

"There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities at the New England
Aquarium, and applications are accepted year round. Volunteers at the
New England Aquarium can help take care of our animals, educate
visitors, and support special events."

People Making a Difference Through Community Service

Helps other charitable groups by
organizing one day, hands-on community service projects and recruiting
volunteers for needed work.

Project Bread

Dedicated to alleviating, preventing and ending hunger in Massachusetts. Sponsors the annual Walk for Hunger.

Samariteens

Samariteens is a program run by teens for teens. It is a helpline
dedicated to reducing the rate of suicide among teens in Massachusetts.

Single Volunteers Boston

"Single Volunteers Boston provides one-time volunteer options to
singles in the Boston area. Some of the non-profits we work with
regularly are The Franklin Park Zoo, The Greater Boston Food Bank,
Bread and Jams, and Cradles to Crayons. The only requirement is that
you are single and not in a committed relationship 21+ You will meet a
diverse interesting singles in the Boston area plus help out worth
while non profits."

VistaCare

"We provide full training for people interested in visiting hospice
patients, throughout the Boston area, to provide friendly companionship
and brighten their days. Many patients reside is nursing homes or other
long-term care facilities and others are in their own homes.
Volunteering with our hospice organization is extremely flexible and
volunteers receive a great deal of support."

Women's Lunch Place

"The Women's Lunch Place is a daytime shelter where homeless and poor
women and their children find support, friendship, a nutritious
home-cooked meal and a safe haven from the streets. Most importantly,
it provides a harbor to women who have suffered unbearable losses of
family, friends and home, where they can regain a sense of dignity and
self-esteem. Volunteers participate in all aspects of the organization, both in the shelter and in our offices."

YAVA - Young Alumni Volunteer Association

"YAVA was founded in Boston in December 2005 to be comprised of college
seniors, recent college graduates, and graduate students who volunteer
and socialize together. We are a community of 1,200+
volunteers-turned-friends who annually provide 6,000+ hours in support
of 50+ charities in Boston and the surrounding suburbs."
